Krispy Kreme Adelaide brief history

The news hit the media way back in late 2011 that Krispy Kreme South Australia was coming. The license to sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts was granted to Peregrine Corporation in November 2011. There was apparently a Facebook group with thousands of members all demanding a Krispy Kreme in South Australia. They finally got their wish.

The operator of the SA franchise is Doughboys Manufacturing SA, which is owned by the family who own the On The Run stores (parent company is Peregrine Corporation).

It was a complete circus when the first Krispy Kreme Adelaide store opened in July 2014. Customers were brawling in the car park apparently and there was even an alleged knifepoint doughnut robbery. More about that is on Cops hunt Krispy Krim armed robber of Adelaide donuts!.

Parking fines in the nearby streets raked in approximately $21,000 in the first week after the first store opened on July 15, 2014 in West Croydon. There are only 60 car parks on the site and it was probably not entirely anticipated that hundreds of people would line up overnight on a freezing cold night waiting to get their first Krispy Kreme doughnut in South Australia?

The general public reading about all this took to social media to express their bewilderment and laugh at the stupidity of what they saw as bogans queued there in the photo published by the media. Adelaide Now asked in one story about it: “What kind of chin-dribbler lines up for a doughnut?” (Nick Ryan: A box of doughnuts on a plane is like having a passport identifying you as a citizen of Lardarse Bogantown).
