Emergency assistance phone number
You can call Police, Fire and Ambulance services anywhere in Australia on 000 for free if there is an emergency that you witness or are involved in. This does not include the pizza delivery guy failing to turn up to your hotel room or other activities that are not an emergency. There are people who actually call the emergency number in some countries for trivial matters, believe it or not? However, it is important to be aware that if you do this in Australia then you may be fined. The emergency number is for emergencies only!
For general Police assistance call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Be aware that you may have to wait a while for Police attendance, especially on busy Friday and Saturday nights in most cities in Australia.
Theft from cars
Do not leave valuables inside the car that you are using during your travels in Australia. Police always advise the public to remove all valuables from their car. There are newspaper stories every week about crime sprees involving theft from vehicles. It is common sense to remove valuables but you would be amazed at how many people leave laptops and money in their car and return to find them gone.
Without meaning to tie cars in with the following, the legal alcohol consumption age in Australia is 18. (Driving under the influence is obviously illegal as well and you can be breath and drug tested by mobile Police.) The drinking age is higher in some other countries. It is illegal to consume alcohol in a public space unless specifically designated for that purpose (e.g. at major events). It is also illegal to supply alcohol to any person under the age of 18.
